Gears E-Day 4-Player Co-op: Campaign, Split-Screen & Limits

Gears of War: E-Day supports up to four-player online campaign co-op, two-player split-screen on console, four-player Combat Training, and 12-player Horde Siege.

Gears of War: E-Day supports up to four-player online co-op for the full campaign. That is the clearest answer to the main question, but it is easy to misread because E-Day also supports two-player split-screen on console, four-player Combat Training, and a separate 12-player Horde Siege PvE mode.

The important distinction is simple: four-player campaign co-op means online play. The confirmed local campaign option is two players sharing one console screen. If you are planning a group before launch, use the official player limits rather than assuming every mode shares the same party size.

Is Gears E-Day really four-player co-op?

Yes. Xbox's current official game page says the campaign can be played alone, in split-screen co-op, or online with up to four players. Xbox Wire's June 2026 feature goes further and explains why four players fit the story: Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago, Mags Carter, and Lucas Reyes form Bravo Squad, and the full campaign can be played with four-player online co-op.

That makes E-Day different from a game where four-player support exists only in a side mode. The four-person setup is tied directly to the story squad itself.

The confirmed campaign options are:

Campaign setupConfirmed player countWhat it means
Solo1Play the full campaign alone.
Console split-screen2Two local players share one supported console screen.
Online campaign co-opUp to 4A full Bravo Squad can play the campaign together online.
Four-player local split-screenNot confirmedDo not infer this from the four-player online limit.
PC split-screenNot confirmedXbox specifically identifies two-player split-screen as a console feature.

For the narrative side of those four characters, see the Gears E-Day story guide.

Who are the four playable campaign characters?

Xbox Wire identifies the four core members of Bravo Squad as:

  • Marcus Fenix
  • Dominic Santiago
  • Mags Carter
  • Lucas Reyes

Mags Carter is a former Gear working at Kalona's Imulsion Refinery when Emergence Day begins. Lucas Reyes is a young cadet and communications officer who has not yet experienced the front lines. Their inclusion helps explain why E-Day can support four players without treating extra co-op slots as anonymous soldiers disconnected from the story.

The Coalition's stated approach is also useful for understanding the mode: the campaign is not being framed as four separate storylines. Bravo Squad moves through one campaign together, and the full campaign is designed to support different party sizes.

A solo player is therefore not choosing a lesser campaign, and a four-player group is not entering a separate multiplayer campaign. Both are playing the same story framework with different squad sizes.

Does Gears E-Day have four-player split-screen?

No four-player split-screen mode has been confirmed. The official Xbox page draws a clear line between two-player split-screen co-op on console and up to four players online.

That means these common setups should be treated differently:

  • Two players in the same room on one console: confirmed for campaign split-screen.
  • Three or four players in different locations: confirmed through online campaign co-op.
  • Four players on one console or one screen: not confirmed.
  • PC local split-screen: not confirmed by the official material checked here.

This boundary matters because search results often shorten “four-player campaign co-op” to “four-player co-op” and leave out the word online. That can make it sound as though four people can share one display. The current official wording does not support that assumption.

For the narrower local-play question, use the Gears E-Day split-screen guide.

Can two local players join two online players?

This is one of the details that is still not clearly documented in the official material checked on September 6, 2026.

Xbox confirms two-player console split-screen and up to four-player online campaign co-op, but that does not automatically prove that a two-player local pair can join two remote players in the same campaign session. Some games support mixed local-and-online parties; others keep those connection types separate.

Until Xbox or The Coalition publishes a detailed co-op FAQ, lobby guide, or launch documentation, treat mixed split-screen-plus-online arrangements as unconfirmed rather than guaranteed.

The same caution applies to host migration, campaign checkpoint ownership, difficulty synchronization, and exactly how progression behaves when players join or leave a campaign. Those details may be revealed closer to launch.

How is the campaign designed around four players?

The four-player structure is closely tied to E-Day's rebuilt gameplay and its squad storytelling. Xbox Wire says Marcus, Dom, Mags, and Lucas form Bravo Squad, while The Coalition's gameplay updates explain that E-Day's movement, cover, weapons, and enemy systems were rebuilt from scratch and unified across modes.

For co-op players, that suggests the group is not simply being added on top of a single-character level layout. Combat spaces have to function for solo players and for squads moving, taking cover, flanking, and handling pressure together.

The official material does not yet provide a full breakdown of campaign co-op scaling. It has not established, for example, whether enemy counts always change with player count, whether bosses receive different health values, or whether all difficulty settings use identical scaling rules. Those are reasonable launch questions, but they should not be invented from the four-player headline.

How is four-player campaign co-op different from Horde Siege?

The campaign and Horde Siege are separate experiences even though both emphasize squad play.

FeatureCampaign co-opHorde Siege
Main purposePlay the storyComplete PvE missions and extract
Player countUp to 4 online12 total
Squad structureBravo SquadThree COG squads of four
Story progressionYesNo campaign progression
ClassesNo confirmed campaign class systemAssault, Breacher, Marksman, Medic
Mission formatStory campaignBlitz, Siege and Horde playlists

Horde Siege is The Coalition's new 12-player evolution of Gears PvE. Three squads of four operate on larger Kalona maps, complete their own objectives, cross paths, and eventually fight toward extraction. It is not a 12-player version of the campaign.

See the Horde Siege guide for the full PvE structure and the Gears E-Day multiplayer guide for the complete launch lineup.

What is four-player Combat Training?

Combat Training is another separate co-op feature. According to The Coalition's July 30 multiplayer deep dive, the mode expands the training space onto a multiplayer map and lets players experiment with weapons, controls, and short Locust encounters. It supports four-player co-op.

This makes Combat Training useful for a group that wants to learn E-Day together before entering live PvP or a serious Horde Siege run. It should not be confused with campaign co-op simply because both support four players.

The practical difference is:

  • Campaign: story progression with up to four online players.
  • Combat Training: four-player practice environment.
  • Horde Siege: 12-player PvE split into three squads.
  • Versus: 4v4 competitive PvP.

Does E-Day support cross-platform four-player campaign co-op?

Xbox confirms E-Day for Xbox Series X|S and PC, including Steam, and the game supports Xbox Play Anywhere on eligible Xbox digital purchases. However, the specific official sources checked for this article do not spell out a complete campaign cross-play matrix.

That means it is safer not to promise that every Xbox, Microsoft Store PC, and Steam combination can join the same campaign lobby until The Coalition publishes explicit cross-play documentation for campaign co-op.

The site has a separate Gears E-Day crossplay guide for that question, because campaign party compatibility deserves its own evidence rather than being inferred from platform availability.

What group size is best for the campaign?

There is no official “best” player count. The correct choice depends on how you want to experience the story.

Solo is the most straightforward option if you want to control the pace, explore environments, and hear dialogue without coordinating a group. Two-player split-screen is the confirmed couch-co-op route for console players. Two to four players online is the natural choice for friends who want to experience Bravo Squad as a group.

Four players may be especially appealing because the announced squad itself has four playable members, but that does not mean the campaign requires a full party. Xbox explicitly presents solo play as a full campaign option.

Gears E-Day 4-player co-op FAQ

Can four people play the full Gears E-Day campaign?

Yes. Xbox and Xbox Wire confirm that the campaign supports up to four players online.

Is Gears E-Day four-player local co-op?

No four-player local setup is confirmed. The official local campaign option is two-player split-screen on console.

Can two people play split-screen?

Yes. Two-player campaign split-screen is confirmed on console.

Is split-screen confirmed on PC?

No. The current official wording identifies two-player split-screen as a console feature, so PC split-screen should remain unconfirmed unless later documentation changes that.

Are the four co-op characters Marcus, Dom, Mags, and Lucas?

Those four characters form Bravo Squad and are the four announced playable campaign characters. Xbox Wire says the entire campaign can be played with four-player online co-op.

Is four-player Combat Training the same as the campaign?

No. Combat Training is a separate practice mode that also supports four-player co-op.

Is Horde Siege only four players?

No. Horde Siege supports 12 players total, divided into three COG squads of four.

Bottom line

Gears of War: E-Day has four-player online campaign co-op, built around the four members of Bravo Squad: Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago, Mags Carter, and Lucas Reyes. Console players also get two-player split-screen for the campaign, but four-player local split-screen is not confirmed.

Keep the other multiplayer numbers separate: Combat Training supports four-player co-op, Horde Siege supports 12 players across three squads, and Versus uses 4v4 teams. For launch planning, the safest rule is simple: use online play for a three- or four-person campaign group, and use console split-screen for two people sharing one screen.
