Gears E-Day Reveal: From the 2024 Announcement to the 2026 Gameplay Reveal

A verified timeline of the Gears of War: E-Day reveal, from the 2024 in-engine announcement trailer to the 2026 gameplay reveal, Direct, campaign details, and later confirmations.

The Gears of War: E-Day reveal happened in stages rather than in one information dump. The first stage was the surprise June 9, 2024 announcement trailer, which established the premise: younger Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago facing the first Locust invasion on Emergence Day. The second major stage arrived on June 7, 2026, when Xbox opened its annual showcase with the first gameplay demo and followed it with a dedicated E-Day Direct. By August and September 2026, official campaign previews had filled in many of the questions that the first two reveals intentionally left open.

Gears of War: E-Day reveal timeline

This page is a historical reveal guide, so it separates what was known at each milestone from what was confirmed later. For the complete video list, see the Gears E-Day trailer guide. For current release information, use the release-date guide.

June 9, 2024: the original reveal

Gears of War: E-Day was unveiled at the end of the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase. The in-engine trailer focused on Marcus struggling against a Locust Drone before Dom arrives, immediately establishing that these are younger versions of the heroes and that the Locust are still frightening, unfamiliar enemies rather than a threat humanity has learned to fight.

The accompanying Xbox Wire interview established the creative direction clearly. The Coalition called E-Day an origin story centered on the horror of the Locust invasion and on the beginning of Marcus and Dom's famous brotherhood. The studio also stressed that the game was being built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5 and that the goal was not to remake the first Gears, but to revisit what made the original feel brutal, intimate, and frightening through modern technology.

The reveal also planted several details that became important later. Marcus briefly carries the MK1 Lancer with a bayonet rather than the familiar chainsaw weapon. The Coalition described E-Day as a "story of many origins," including the Chainsaw Lancer. At the time, the exact path from standard Lancer to chainsaw prototype was intentionally withheld.

What the 2024 reveal did not provide was equally important. It did not announce a release date, mission count, multiplayer lineup, full Bravo Squad, villain, campaign structure, or complete weapon roster. Those details arrived over the following two years.

June 7, 2026: gameplay reveal and E-Day Direct

The 2026 Xbox Games Showcase changed E-Day from a cinematic concept into a clearly defined game. The first official gameplay demo was followed by the Gears of War: E-Day Direct, where The Coalition discussed campaign design, combat, characters, technology, and the city of Kalona.

The event confirmed that E-Day is set fourteen years before the original Gears of War and that the campaign follows the catastrophe from inside Kalona. The Coalition described the story as unfolding across roughly three intense nights, with the emotional arc changing from confusion and fear, to regrouping, to desperation as the characters realize the Locust attack is not an isolated event.

The 2026 reveal also expanded the playable cast. Marcus and Dom remain the central "front-seat" relationship, but Bravo Squad includes Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes as important companions. The campaign supports up to four-player online co-op, with two-player split-screen on console.

On the gameplay side, the Direct and later deep dive showed that E-Day is not simply carrying forward Gears 5 movement. The Coalition rebuilt movement and cover from scratch, adding sprint changes, slide, jump and climb actions, broader cover shapes, cover gaps, and a more committed cover-cancel system designed to reduce hyper-bouncing while preserving the weight of classic Gears movement.

What later previews answered

Several questions that were open after the June 2026 reveal are no longer open as of September 6.

The August 25 campaign hands-on preview confirmed that the entire campaign remains centered on Kalona and provided concrete Act 2 context. Bravo Squad uses Kalona City Hall as a temporary COG command center, moves through the city after the civilian disaster, and reaches Oria Stadium, where it links up with Tai Kaliso and Theta Squad. That sequence also introduces the Prototype Chainsaw Lancer, crudely assembled from a standard Lancer and an old chainsaw.

The same preview confirmed that E-Day is not a traditional full open world. Kalona opens up in selected areas, the squad can use a tourist map as an actual in-game navigation aid, and at least one optional side mission exists in Chapter 2, but Xbox Wire still described the broader structure as an "otherwise linear story."

Then, on September 4, the Official Xbox Podcast confirmed the campaign's named central Locust commander: Vraahk, a Blight Commander injured in the Lambent War who leads the elite Scorched Legion. That gave the campaign a clearer antagonist structure than the original 2024 announcement ever suggested.

The value of this timeline is that it prevents older reveal articles from being mistaken for the current state of the game. For example, saying "the Chainsaw Lancer origin has not been revealed" was accurate in 2024 but is no longer accurate in September 2026.

What the reveal now tells us about the finished game

Taken together, the reveal cycle establishes E-Day as a full mainline-scale Gears release rather than a small prequel experiment. The campaign is built around Emergence Day and Marcus and Dom's early brotherhood, but it also has a defined four-person squad, a citywide three-night structure, named Locust leadership, optional exploration, modernized movement, and a substantial multiplayer package.

Multiplayer is now clearly divided between 12-player Horde Siege and 4v4 Versus. Horde Siege uses three four-player COG squads on larger Kalona battlefields, while Versus launches with Team Deathmatch, Conquest, Demolition, and Crucible across six maps. Those details were not part of the 2024 reveal and should not be retroactively attributed to that first trailer.

Likewise, the release plan is now fixed enough to state clearly: Standard launch is October 6, 2026, while Premium and Collector access can begin on October 1. Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, cloud and Xbox Play Anywhere are the announced routes.

What is still not revealed

Even after the large amount of 2026 coverage, some information remains unreleased. There is still no official full campaign chapter list, final mission count, complete boss roster, ending breakdown, or universal resolution/FPS table for every PC and Xbox configuration.

The key editorial rule is therefore simple: update old reveal claims when later official evidence exists, but do not replace old uncertainty with new speculation.

Gears E-Day reveal FAQ

Gears of War: E-Day was first revealed on June 9, 2024 during the Xbox Games Showcase with an in-engine announcement trailer.

When was the first gameplay reveal?

The first major official gameplay demo was shown on June 7, 2026 at Xbox Games Showcase 2026, immediately followed by the Gears of War: E-Day Direct.

Did the original trailer show the Chainsaw Lancer?

No. The 2024 trailer showed the older MK1 Lancer configuration. Later 2026 campaign coverage revealed how Bravo Squad encounters a crude Prototype Chainsaw Lancer at Oria Stadium.

Did the reveal confirm Vraahk?

Not the original reveal. Vraahk was confirmed later in 2026 campaign coverage as a Blight Commander leading the Scorched Legion.

Is E-Day a remake or Gears 6?

No. The Coalition presents E-Day as a new origin story. It is not a remake of the first Gears and is distinct from a hypothetical numbered sequel commonly called Gears 6.

Bottom line

The Gears E-Day reveal evolved from a 2024 statement of intent into a detailed 2026 product picture. The first trailer established Emergence Day, younger Marcus and Dom, horror, and a return to the franchise's foundations. The 2026 gameplay reveal and Direct added Kalona, Bravo Squad, rebuilt combat and movement, and the release plan. August and September then filled in Oria Stadium, Tai, the Prototype Chainsaw Lancer, Vraahk, and the Scorched Legion.

If you want the cleanest current picture, treat the 2024 trailer as the origin of the idea and the 2026 campaign and gameplay coverage as the evidence for how that idea has become the final game.
