Gears of War: E-Day launches with more than 60 multiplayer character skins across COG and Locust characters, and those skins are separate from the Horde Siege class system. That means your visible character does not determine whether you play Assault, Breacher, Marksman, or Medic. The Coalition also says every major character and skin that appears in the campaign will be available to unlock on day one, with new characters and additional skins added every season.
That structure is important because E-Day is not building multiplayer around a tiny hero roster. It is closer to a large Gears character collection layered over distinct gameplay systems: character skins define identity, Horde Siege classes define PvE role, and customization progression determines how you unlock or acquire cosmetics.
How many multiplayer characters are in Gears E-Day?
The official Multiplayer Deep Dive does not publish one final name-by-name roster. Instead, it gives the more useful launch-scale number: over 60 character skins across an array of COG and Locust characters.
That wording matters. “60+ character skins” does not necessarily mean 60 completely different named people or creatures. One character can have multiple skins, including base appearances, campaign looks, Legendary variants, Premium Edition cosmetics, and seasonal versions.
The Coalition also confirms that every major character and skin that appears in the campaign is available to unlock on day one. This gives the multiplayer roster a direct connection to the story without requiring players to buy a Premium edition just to access important campaign faces.
A full definitive roster should still wait for an official launch catalog or Barracks listing. Community screenshots can help identify appearances, but they should not be treated as a complete database before the game exposes the final inventory.
Character skins are separate from Horde Siege classes
One of the most important systems to understand is that character identity and Horde Siege role are separate choices.
Horde Siege launches with four classes:
- Assault
- Breacher
- Marksman
- Medic
Any class can be paired with any supported character skin. Choosing Marcus does not force one class. Choosing Dom does not automatically make you a Breacher. A Tai skin does not come with a unique Horde ability merely because Tai is a specific campaign character.
The class choice controls your gameplay role: starting loadout, combat bonus, Tactical Gear, class progression, and class-specific unlock path. The skin controls how your character looks.
That separation gives players freedom to keep a favorite character while changing the squad role needed for the mission. It also prevents the multiplayer roster from becoming a hero-shooter system where every named character carries a fixed ability kit.
For the full role breakdown, see the Gears E-Day classes guide.
Which multiplayer character skins are officially named?
The Coalition has already named several important skins through edition and customization announcements.
Exfil Dom
Exfil Dom is a Legendary Dominic Santiago character skin tied to the E-Day pre-order bonus. The official editions page says the character skin is applicable to Dominic Santiago in Horde Siege and Versus.
The same bonus also includes the Exfil Legendary Weapon Skin Set. Exfil Dom is therefore a confirmed multiplayer cosmetic, not merely a promotional image of Dom.
Death’s Rendezvous Marcus
The Death’s Rendezvous Marcus Fenix Legendary Character Skin is part of the Emergence Customization Pack included with the Premium Edition and Premium Edition Upgrade.
It is one of the clearest examples of E-Day’s higher-rarity cosmetic direction. The Coalition says Legendary skins may push beyond strictly grounded canon presentation and become more imaginative while still drawing from the imagery and symbolism of the Gears universe.
Bloodied Hunter Tai
The same Emergence Customization Pack includes the Bloodied Hunter Tai Kaliso Epic Character Skin. That confirms another named multiplayer skin tied to a major campaign character.
These Premium cosmetics do not mean standard players are locked out of Marcus or Tai as characters. The official customization plan separately says major campaign characters and skins are available to unlock on day one; Premium content is a specific cosmetic package layered on top of the broader launch collection.
What is in the Emergence Customization Pack?
The launch Premium pack contains more than character skins. Official Gears and Xbox listings identify:
- Death’s Rendezvous Marcus Fenix Legendary Character Skin;
- Bloodied Hunter Tai Kaliso Epic Character Skin;
- Death’s Rendezvous Legendary Character Pose;
- We Must Improvise Legendary Character Pose;
- Death’s Rendezvous Legendary Weapon Skin Set;
- Emergence Omen Rare Weapon Skin Set;
- Emergence Omen Banner and Emblem; and
- a Death’s Rendezvous / Rendezvous Marcus icon.
Premium Edition also includes four additional seasonal customization packs, for five packs total when counting Emergence. The official editions page says each seasonal customization pack includes two character skins, two weapon skin sets, two poses, and a banner, emblem, and icon.
That gives Premium buyers a predictable cosmetic stream, but it does not replace the normal unlock system available to the rest of the player base.
Does Gears E-Day have a battle pass?
No. The Coalition explicitly says E-Day has no battle pass and no Tour of Duty.
The stated philosophy is that nearly every customization item can be earned through gameplay. That includes high-rarity items such as Legendary character skins, Epic weapon skin sets, poses, banners, and other customization pieces, subject to their specific unlock conditions.
There are two main acquisition paths.
Direct unlocks
Some cosmetics are earned directly from:
- seasonal challenges;
- event challenges;
- achievements; and
- Gears 3-inspired medals.
When a challenge or achievement is active, the Coalition says players cannot simply bypass it with money or Coins. The reward is tied to completing the requirement.
Coins and the Barracks
Other items can be obtained by finishing matches, earning Coins, and spending those Coins in the Barracks on specific items.
This is important because the system is not described as a random loot-box model. Coins are a grind currency, and the Barracks lets the player target particular cosmetics.
If a limited-time challenge expires, its reward is planned to enter the Barracks after a cooldown period, where it can later be acquired with Coins or Iron. That means missing a seasonal challenge does not necessarily make its cosmetic permanently unobtainable.
What is Iron used for?
Iron is E-Day’s premium in-game currency. It can be purchased and used to acquire individual items in the Barracks or featured shop offers more quickly.
The Coalition positions Iron as an optional shortcut rather than the only route to the normal cosmetic collection. If an item is already obtainable through Coins, spending Iron can speed up the acquisition while allowing the player to save Coins for something else.
There are still pay-only exceptions. The official multiplayer overview limits those exceptions primarily to:
- Premium Edition / Premium Edition Upgrade content;
- charity offers; and
- selected partnership items.
That means the statement “almost everything is earnable” should not be misread as “every single cosmetic is free.” Premium packs remain paid content.
How does the weekly shop work?
E-Day has a rotating in-game shop, but the official design includes two player-friendly rules.
First, the shop is not supposed to introduce ordinary cosmetics that disappear forever as shop exclusives. Weekly offers feature discounted items that are already available individually in the Barracks for Coins or Iron. When a bundle leaves the weekly rotation, those normal items remain in the Barracks.
Second, bundles use complete-the-set pricing. If you already own part of a featured bundle, the price is reduced instead of charging you again for duplicate items.
That system separates temporary discounts from permanent availability, which is useful when planning which character skins to chase first.
What happens with characters after launch?
The Coalition has committed to five themed post-launch multiplayer seasons, starting with Season 1: Emergence.
Those seasons are planned to add:
- new maps;
- new modes;
- new characters;
- additional character skins;
- new Horde Siege classes;
- limited-time events; and
- more customization content.
Seasonal Challenges can also unlock new base characters. Foundations Challenges provide non-expiring introductory objectives and mainly award base characters, while some Campaign-related achievements unlock base characters as well.
This means the 60+ launch skins are the starting collection, not the final lifetime roster.
Are multiplayer skins canon?
Not always. The Coalition says multiplayer cosmetics are not universally considered canon.
Many skins are inspired by Gears lore, events, themes, and world elements, but Legendary skins can be more exaggerated and imaginative. That distinction is useful when a multiplayer appearance seems inconsistent with a character’s exact campaign outfit or timeline.
A skin being playable does not automatically establish that the character literally wore that outfit during the E-Day campaign.
COG and Locust characters in Versus
The official launch skin count explicitly covers both COG and Locust characters. This matters most in Versus, where the two factions provide the visual identity for competitive matches.
Versus itself does not use the Horde Siege class system. Players begin with equal starting weapons and equipment, and Weapon Mods are disabled. Character skins therefore serve as customization rather than a source of competitive stat advantages.
For the full PvP structure, see the Gears E-Day multiplayer guide.
Gears E-Day multiplayer characters FAQ
How many character skins are in Gears E-Day at launch?
The official Multiplayer Deep Dive says there will be more than 60 character skins across COG and Locust characters at launch.
Are classes tied to specific characters?
No. Horde Siege classes can be combined with any character skin. Character appearance and gameplay class are separate systems.
Is Dom playable in multiplayer?
Yes. Dominic Santiago is directly confirmed through official multiplayer material, and the Exfil Dom Legendary Character Skin is explicitly listed for use in Horde Siege and Versus.
Is Tai playable in multiplayer?
Tai Kaliso has a named Premium cosmetic, Bloodied Hunter Tai, which confirms multiplayer skin support for the character.
Does Gears E-Day have a battle pass?
No. The Coalition says there is no battle pass or Tour of Duty. Nearly every customization item can be earned through gameplay, with limited paid-only exceptions.
Can I buy character skins with Coins?
Many cosmetics can be acquired using Coins in the Barracks. Direct challenge or achievement rewards must first be earned through those requirements while active; after limited-time rewards expire and pass through a cooldown period, they can later enter the Barracks.
What is Season 1 called?
The launch season is Season 1: Emergence. It begins a planned run of five themed post-launch multiplayer seasons.
Bottom line
Gears E-Day multiplayer characters are built around a large cosmetic roster rather than fixed hero abilities. The game launches with 60+ COG and Locust character skins, lets any Horde Siege class pair with any skin, makes major campaign characters unlockable on day one, and adds more characters and cosmetics through five themed multiplayer seasons.
The customization economy is unusually important to the story here: there is no battle pass, most items can be earned by playing, Coins provide a normal Barracks unlock path, Iron offers an optional premium shortcut, and Premium Edition content sits outside that standard earnable pool. Named skins such as Exfil Dom, Death’s Rendezvous Marcus, and Bloodied Hunter Tai are already confirmed, but a full launch roster should still wait for the official in-game catalog.
